LifeSaver water-purification bottle

In 2007, more than 15 million people were displaced in India alone due to natural calamities such as flooding – and in many cases, drinking water took too long to reach most of them. Now, British researchers have come out with an inexpensive and portable solution to the problem: The LifeSaver water-purification bottle. In fact, it was the tragic waste of life and serious problems caused by the lack of safe drinking water in the wake of the December 2004 tsunami that inspired Michael Pritchard, the CEO of LifeSaver systems, to build the bottle. “It took a little while and some very frustrating prototypes, but eventually, we did it,” he said. The LifeSaver bottle offers an efficient, cost-effective alternative that is quicker and cheaper to distribute than water, Pritchard said.“Delivering just one plane full of the bottles would provide 5 lakh people with access to safe drinking water for up to 16 months, at a cost of only $45 million” said Pritchard. “It would take 9,375 trips of the plane to deliver the same quantity of water at a cost of $835 million. When you look at it that way, it just makes sense.”The gadget, he said, is aimed at humanitarian aid, military, emergency preparedness, and outdoor consumer markets around the world. Claiming to be the world’s first all-in-one ultra filtration water bottle, the device is said to remove bacteria, viruses, cysts, parasites, fungi and other microbiological waterborne pathogens – all without using chemicals like iodine or chlorine which leave a distinctive taste. “With LifeSaver, there is no need for tablets, boiling, chemicals, tubes, shaking, scrubbing, waiting or effort. The bottle produces clean, sterile drinking water with no foul taste. I truly believe it could save lives one day,” Pritchard said. While current filters can cut out bacteria measuring more than 200 nanometres, viruses – being around 25 nanometres long – escape easily. Pritchard’s bottle uses a 15-nanometre-wide membrane filtration system to clean up any water, thus filtering out viruses without using any chemicals. The bottle also incorporates what LifeSaver systems’ calls ‘Failsafe’ technology. This shuts the bottle’s cartridge off upon reaching its capacity of around 6,000 cumulative litres, and thus prevents contaminated water from being drunk by the user. The US military has already shown an interest.“Water is heavy to carry around. The LifeSaver bottle provides water scavenging capability and fulfils a critical need of sustainability on the battlefield,” said Mark Richter of the US Marine Corps, who has used the bottle.Earlier this year, LifeSaver launched four and six litre versions of the bottle in India through Hyderabad-based Pentagon Rugged Systems at around Rs 25,000-Rs 30,000.
